Massada College in Adelaide announced last week the appointment of a Head of Jewish Studies. The school recently appointed a Principal to head the school when incumbent Rabbi Ronnie Figdor leaves at the end of the year. The position for a Head of Jewish Studies was part of an original plan to raise the status of the Jewish Studies in the school-a plan which predates the appointment of a non-Jewish Principal.
The new Jewish Studies head, Robin Boroda, has been working in the school since arriving in April this year with her husband Stephen. Ms. Boroda has a Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies from the University of Judaism and a Master of Arts in Education at the same University. Ms. Boroda, who also has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from California State University, formed a school choir earlier this year making a public appearance on the steps of State Parliament shortly after its formation.
"We look forward to maintaining the high standards that Massada already enjoys in the community and taking the school's Jewish and Hebrew education to new heights", College President Miriam Zimmet said.
Rabbi Figdor said that he was excited by the appointment of someone who had a range of talents and would show the student and parent body that being Jewish is consistent with being worldly and operating in other spheres.
"I want to provide continutity of exisiting programmes while looking for new ways to integrate the Jewish and the general studies" said Ms. Boroda. "I really want to see Jewish children leaving the College after some years being Jewishly literate feeling good about their Jewishness and being able to handle Jewish skills. Through Jewish Studies all children benefit from the critical thinking skills that are inherent in working with Jewish texts and will provide more opportunities for extension for our gifted students."
